WESTBURY United joint-manager Neil Kirkpatrick was pleased his side came through a “potential banana skin” as they strolled to a comfortable 3-1 win over Toolstation League Premier Division strugglers Brislington at the weekend, writes JONATHAN LEIGHFIELD.

Two quick-fire goals from Callum Demkiv in the first half was added to by Josh Ferguson, continuing Westbury’s outstanding league unbeaten run and leaving them one point off top spot with four games in hand on leaders Bridgwater Town.

Joint-manager Kirkpatrick felt his side were never in any trouble on Saturday and praised their fitness levels as they played for the first time in two weeks in tricky conditions.

He said: “We were in control for the majority of the game, despite the difficult conditions, and once we got ourselves in front, we quite quickly went 2-0 up.

“They pulled one back, which we felt was quite a way offside, but that’s the way it goes. Luckily, we scored again just before half-time to regain that cushion.

“In the second half, we managed the game well, which is what we asked the players to do at half-time. We didn’t do anything silly to let them back in it.

“We haven’t had a lot of football over the last couple of weeks and the pitch was pretty heavy, so we’re pleased with the way we coped with it and it was definitely a potential banana skin, so we’re pleased we came through it.”

Westbury have a formidable unbeaten run but nearly lost their record in the last match between them and their upcoming opponents, Chipping Sodbury Town.

United needed a Joe Stradling goal to rescue a point under the lights at Meadow Lane last month and Kirkpatrick knows that there must be no repeat of that performance on Saturday if his side are to emerge victorious this time around.

He said: “They took points off us at home, so they will fancy their chances and they’ll want to be the ones to end our run.

“Last time, it was a midweek game and it wasn’t their usual squad, but they caused us problems and they can count themselves a bit unlucky that they didn’t beat us that night.

“We want to carry this run on but it will end at some point. It’s a boring old cliché, but we have to take it one game at a time.”

Elsewhere, Bradford Town were also victorious at the weekend as they beat Roman Glass St George 2-0 at home.

Jack Witcombe gave the Bobcats the lead at half-time before Matt Morris doubled the advantage after the break to ensure all three points stayed at Trowbridge Road.
