SWINDON Town striker Kaiyne Woolery hopes his comeback goal last weekend represents a line drawn under his tough start to the season.

Woolery has been held back by persistent injury issues so far in 2018-19, with his starting place against Newport County last Saturday the first time he has been included from kick-off for Town this term.

Prior to that, the 23-year-old had been restricted to just four appearances off the bench – and none at all since late October.

However, Woolery appeared to show all those issues were behind him against the Exiles with an energetic display up front, and capped his return to action with the winning goal late on as Town claimed a battling 2-1 victory in League Two.

With Woolery back to fitness, boss Richie Wellens has a potent weapon at his disposal in attack, and the former Wigan Athletic forward hopes his heroics against Newport can be the catalyst for him to kick on.

“It has been a bit stop-start this season, but hopefully all the problems are done now and I can keep fit until the end of the season,” said Woolery.

“I want to push on and just try to look at the positives.

“I had only trained four sessions before the game (against Newport), so I was blowing a bit at the end.

“The manager just wanted a bit of pace in the team.

“He said not to worry about tracking back all the time, just to use my pace in bursts to give space to other players.

“If the manager asks you to do a job, you can’t say no.

“I am happy I got through it and we got the three points – that’s the main thing.”

Woolery thinks Wellens’ appointment as Town manager could allow supporters to see the best of him.

The new Swindon boss has pledged a mantra of on-the-floor football since his arrival and has highlighted the pace Woolery brings as a threat to opposition sides.

“I think the manger has given us a bit more freedom,” said Woolery, who joined the club back in the summer of 2017.

“He wants us to play a bit more than we were before. The shackles are off a bit.

“I think that suits me, especially with how we played last Saturday where I didn’t have to defend as much.

“When we did win the ball, I was further up the pitch instead of being back in the defensive third.”

Woolery’s late winning goal against the Exiles fired Town to a third straight victory in League Two and they have now cut the gap to the play-off places to four points.

Wellens takes his side to Grimsby Town this weekend in the hope of continuing that fine run of form.

Following the match against the Mariners, Swindon play four games in the space of 11 days over the busy Christmas period.

After an indifferent start to the campaign, Town seem to have hit their straps just at the right time, and Woolery is hopeful that can continue

“I can’t fault the last three games,” said Woolery.

“We have won three now and the Christmas period coming up is massive. If we start to string results together, we will fly up the table.

“The league is very tight, so if we keep winning, we will keep climbing the table.”
