FIREFIGHTERS battled a blaze last Friday at Neston in the former glove factory in the village.

Crews from four stations dealt with the inferno in the disused building in Rough Street.

Firefighters from Chippenham, Melksham, Bradford on Avon and Bath brought the fire under control after villagers alerted the emergency services when they saw huge columns of black smoke.

The fire ripped through the building leaving parts of the structure unsafe.

The fire was under control with three hours of the outbreak at around noon on December 28.

The site of the Neston Glove factory at the corner of Rough Street was originally used as a coach house before becoming a factory in Edwardian times.

At its height 60 people worked in the factory along with 60 outworkers.

When the factory closed in 1965, the building was used to store plastics and tyres.

In 2014 the tyre store was destroyed by fire leaving it empty.
