GOALKEEPERS Lawrence Vigouroux and Luke McCormick are still yet to agree contract extension terms with Swindon Town, but manager Richie Wellens hopes talks can develop in the coming weeks.

Both stoppers have impressed Wellens enough to earn a spot in Town’s squad for next season, but ongoing negotiations have so far delayed contract agreements.

Chile international Vigouroux has been a part of the Town squad since joining on-loan from Premier League giants Liverpool in the summer of 2015 – and has made 27 appearances so far this season.

McCormick, meanwhile, was drafted in by Wellens’ predecessor – Phil Brown – following the departure of Stuart Moore to Milton Keynes last summer.

Wellens remains confident the pair will commit their services to next season, but added he will know more in the coming weeks with regards to the likelihood of a deal being struck.

He said: “We’re waiting on Lawrence Vigouroux and Luke McCormick.

“We want things done, but we’re not in a rush. I’m quite comfortable where we are at.

“We’ll wait to see how things develop over the coming weeks.”

It’s also still possible that the current squad size could be reduced, with Wellens revealing he still wants more than one player to depart Wiltshire in favour of non-league loan experience.

Without naming names, the 38-year-old confirmed – much like the goalkeeping situation – negotiations are still ongoing.

“In terms of outgoings, there are still a couple of players I would like to go out,” said Wellens.

“But there is no further news about that.”

Meanwhile, a 10-day fixture break has prompted concern from a proportion of fans regarding players’ match sharpness when Grimsby Town travel to the Energy Check County Ground tomorrow (3pm).

An extended weekend saw the Town squad report back to training on Tuesday morning, with Saturday, Sunday and Monday granted as days off.

A friendly match was considered by Wellens, but it simply did not fit into his match preparation schedule.

“Sometimes, it’s important to fill the time with friendlies,” said Wellens.

“Because of the days off, we didn’t feel it would be right that the first day for the players to come back in would be a game.

“It didn’t fit into the week right. We decided to go against a friendly.

“I’m happy with training, and I’m comfortable. There are a few players in the squad that need some match practice, but we’re going to have to try and get the training load into them.

“We know the Newport game is coming, so we know there might be a few Saturday-Tuesday games coming up. When those games do come, I want the players to be fresh.”
