STRATTON Juniors claimed a momentous win over Wheatsheaf Stratton in the only Premier Division fixture to take place in the Swindon & District League at the weekend.

A 5-1 victory in the Stratton derby ensured Juniors will finish the season in second place in only their third season as a club.

Ryan Major struck twice, as did Josh Padden, with Nathaniel Harrison completing the scoring.

Juniors’ manager, Craig Bright bemoaned his side’s slow start to the game before seeing them storm back for victory.

He said: “We started quite flat and Wheatsheaf went 1-0 up, but that kicked us into gear and got us going forward.

“We relaxed a bit more, stepped it up and then the goals and the points came for us.”

With the Wiltshire Junior Cup final to play in two weeks’ time, Juniors can cap off a memorable season with some silverware, although Bright claims it could have been even better.

He said: “We’ve still got the Wiltshire Junior Cup final coming up and then we’ve finished second in only our third season as a club, so that’s nice.

“The only frustrating thing for us is that we’ve beaten Ruby Removals twice at the beginning of the season – that’s their only two losses.

“It’s just those couple of results, drawing against Bakers Arms twice and dropping five points against Supermarine Reserves that ruined our chances of winning the league.”

In Division One, Kintbury Rangers Reserves continued their 100 per cent winning record with a 4-1 victory away at Chiseldon in their 13th league fixture.

Second-placed Blunsdon remain level on points with Kintbury, having played a game more, thanks to a 9-3 demolition of Swindon Centurions.

The top two will meet next weekend as the title race is set to take a potentially decisive turn.

Sportz Central ended a run of six games without a win after defeating third-placed Wroughton Reserves 4-1 at home.

The result saw Central pick up three points for the first time since late November.

Meanwhile, in Division Two, Redhouse bounced back from their first defeat of the season in style with a convincing 7-1 win over Down Ampney.

Spectrum picked up a potentially decisive victory over Swindon AFC in the quest for a second-placed finish.

Their 1-0 win will only be enough if either Swindon AFC and Cricklade Town Reserves do not pick up maximum points from their remaining fixtures.

Priory Vale held on to fourth for the time being thanks to a 5-1 win away at Bassett Bulldogs, while Cricklade Town Reserves kept up their hunt for second with a 3-1 success over Brockhill United.
