TWO young boxers did Chippenham proud when they represented England in the Three Nations Championship in Barnsley.

They were 13-year-old Katie Doig and 14-year-old Eloise Edwards, with Eloise winning a gold medal and Katie taking home a bronze.

Liam Lathbury, the founder and head coach of Emeralds Boxing Club, where the girls train, said: "It just proves that if you are willing to put the hard work in then the sky's the limit. Eloise is our 7th National Champion and, even better than that, she's a Three Nations champion."

Eloise said: "Bringing home a gold medal is something I always dreamed about and hopefully one day, if all my dreams come true, I will be bringing home an Olympic Gold. Anything is achievable with dedication and hard work."

Katie said: "I was proud to be flying the flag for Chippenham and Emeralds Boxing Club on the national stage. It still feels amazing to have come away with a bronze medal."

Mr Lathbury added: “In the seven years we have been open we have produced six National Champions, one of who was female, which would have been a great achievement even for a big city gym, let alone a gym from a small market town in the West Country.

“No club has so far ever had two girls selected at the same time to represent their country, which is a fantastic achievement for Emeralds Boxing Club.

“It's things like this that inspire all the other members and make all the endless hard work from the coaches and boxers alike worth all the effort put in.

“I can't take all the praise myself as I have a fantastic team behind me who give up their free time to help train our boxers.

“Most importantly it's the girls who deserve the majority of the praise and I think it still hasn't really sunk in just what they have achieved.”

Back in May, the two girls both won silver medals in the National School Championships.
