JODY Bevan can see plenty of scope for improvement from his Fairford Town side as they get set to start the new Hellenic League Premier Division season this weekend.

It is a step into the unknown for the Cinder Lane side first up as they travel to newcomers Burnham, who were promoted as Division One West champions last term.

Bevan is pleased with the building blocks that have been established at Fairford over the summer, and is confident they can better last season's finish of 13th place once the competitive action gets under way.

"The season always sees to come around quickly but we've had six weeks of pre-season training and the lads have done a lot of good work. We are looking forward to getting going with the proper stuff now," said Bevan.

"The aim is to improve. We are hoping to be in the top half of the table and even better, if we can.

"We've learned a lot in pre-season. Against some of the bigger teams we have played, the performances have been really good. Then against some of the lesser teams, the results have been OK but the performances not so good.

"We know we are not the finished article by any means. We are a work in progress but I think we will do OK this season.

"We've got a a good group of young players who have plenty of scope to improve."

Bevan concedes Fairford do not have much recent history to go on ahead of their curtain-raiser against Burnham.

However, the Town boss does not expect to be confronted by anything too different to what they would regularly face and is hopeful of making a winning start against the Slough side.

"It's a bit of a step into the unknown as we don't know much about them," said Bevan.

"They won their league last season so they must be doing something right, and they'll want to come up a level and make an impact.

"We haven't seen much of them but I imagine they'll be decent going forward and maybe not so strong at the back. That's the way it seems to be at most Hellenic League teams.

"We will go there looking for a positive start to the season."
