SHRIVENHAM recorded their first win of the new Hellenic League season as they claimed the bragging rights in last night’s Premier Division derby away at Royal Wootton Bassett Town.

Bassett picked up a point in their campaign curtain-raiser at the weekend, while Shrivvy suffered defeat.

Both teams therefore arrived at the Gerrard Buxton Sports Ground looking for their first victory of the season – and it was Gareth Davies’ visitors who finished on top.

They were forced to come from behind to take the points, though, as Danny Langford headed Bassett in front, pouncing on the follow-up after Shrivvy keeper Mike Alexander had denied Brad Pagliaroli.

Davies’ side turned the game around before the break, though, and Josh Morse levelled the scores with a simple tap-in before Shrivvy capitalised on a numerical advantage.

Bassett’s Rhys Talmash was sent off for violent conduct and the visitors were quick to make the most of their extra man as Ryan Stanners put them ahead at the interval.

Shrivenham continued to up the ante as the second half got under way and moved two goals to the good when Sam Ockwell fired home from distance.

With the contest threatening to get away from them, Bassett were then handed a lifeline when Tom Cole was fouled in the box.

Callum Parsons made no mistake from the resulting penalty, sending Alexander the wrong way to cut the deficit to one.

However, Bassett were unable to force an equaliser in the closing stages and Shrivvy confidently saw out the final few minutes to take the spoils in this early-season derby.

Meanwhile, Fairford Town made it two wins from two at the start of the season with a 3-1 success away at Lydney Town.
