SEAN Wood’s second-half penalty proved decisive for Highworth Town as they made progress in the Southern League Challenge Cup with a 1-0 victory at home to Mangotsfield United on Wednesday night.

Wood lashed home from 12 yards on the hour mark at the Save on Tyres Stadium to make it four wins in a row in all competitions for the Worthians.

There was little to choose between the two sides in a goalless first half, with Corey King having the best chance for the home side but his effort was saved by Mangotsfield keeper Archie Watts.

United threatened in the early stages of the second half but a golden chance to break the deadlock went begging before the crucial penalty arrived on the hour mark.

Wood made no mistake from 12 yards, sending stopper Watts the wrong way to fire the hosts ahead.

That proved the last meaningful chance of note as Highworth held firm in the closing stages to book their place in the next round.
