TUCKED away in a side street, Mill Street, outside of Trowbridge town centre, it's easy to see how Caffe Italiano could go under the radar.

In December this family-run hidden gem will be celebrating 14 years of producing high quality, authentic Italian food, and their dishes still certainly do not disappoint.

Admittedly, the restaurant's decor is modest, with plain wooden tables and photos of Italy on the walls.

I personally don't mind when eateries opt for a simple approach to decoration, because at the end of the day, you go there to eat good food.

Caffe Italiano seems to very much play on the fact they are an honest business who want to bring classic Italian dishes to Trowbridge.

My guest and I strolled into the restaurant, shortly after its opening at 6pm, and were welcomed by the two young servers who sat us at our reserved table.

It appeared that one of the servers was being trained that night so I forgave any errors made during our visit, because again Caffe Italiano functions as a modest eatery.

My guest ordered a glass of the house white, while I simply chose a coke.

I was the only one who wanted to have a starter, and opted for bruschetta (£5.80) - one of my favourites.

Caffe Italiano's take on bruschetta involved peppers, tomato, aubergine and courgettes served cold on top of oily bread.

It tasted extremely fresh and was quite frankly, delicious, my only criticism being that I personally prefer warm bread for my bruschetta.

For mains, my guest decided to order the penne sancho pancho (£9.90), which I think is a great name for a pasta dish.

I ordered the calzone (£9.60), which is essentially a folded pizza. They make their calzone with mozzarella, ham, mushrooms and their signature homemade tomato sauce, all stored inside a light, oily dough.

My guest's pasta dish was an extremely generous helping, with tubes of pasta served in a delicious homemade tomato sauce, and topped with a perfect amount of seasoning and herbs.

The calzone I ordered was equally delicious, and also equally filling!

The presentation of the dishes potentially could have been better, but again this ties in with the idea of a simple Italian restaurant serving simple, but delicious, food, with no frills attached.

As well as serving great meals for a sit down lunch or dinner, Caffe Italiano also offers a takeaway service.

Their takeaway menu is rather extensive, with a good range of pizzas and pasta dishes that you can take home with you.

The restaurant as their pizza oven stationed in the restaurant so guests can see their dishes prepared before them.

Overall, the bill came to £31.70, which I consider very reasonable for what we ordered.

While maybe overlooked by many people, due to nearby restaurant chains like Prezzo and Frankie and Benny's, I would go as far as saying you won't find a better place, for real Italian cuisine, in Trowbridge than Caffe Italiano.
