SWINDON Supermarine manager Lee Spalding admitted he was happy to leave Dorchester Town with a point despite conceding an 88th-minute equaliser in the two sides’ 1-1 draw in Southern League Premier Division South on Saturday.

While not overjoyed with the timing of the goal, Spalding felt his side lacked a cutting edge required to emerge victorious and was content to settle for back-to-back draws on the road following their 1-1 tie with Taunton Town a fortnight ago.

Calvin Dinsley volleyed Marine in front 10 minutes before half-time, but further chances were few and far between for Spalding’s men, and they were made to pay for that lack of creativity late on when Sean Wright popped up to steal a point for the home side.

Far from being subdued after watching his team drop two points late on, Spalding actually felt his team responded well to last week’s 4-0 drubbing by Bath City in the FA Cup.

He said: “It was a good reaction to last weekend – the lads were lively, they put loads of effort in, we played some good stuff and scored a good goal in the first half.

“Calvin Dinsley with a good finish put us a goal up, so that was good to get on top.

“We started the second half alright to be fair, but they’ve created a couple of chances – one was disallowed – and the referee has given them a free-kick instead, so we had the rub of the green there.

“But the last 10 minutes, they really had the squeeze on us, and we struggled to get out, so it was one of those ones where you could feel it coming.”

Marine’s draw now makes it six games in Southern League action without a victory, and the Webbswood Stadium outfit are languishing down in 18th place after eight games – just one place above their hosts.

The Marine manager was full of praise for Dorchester and said they are unlikely to spend much longer down the bottom end of the table if they continue to produce more performances like Saturday.

Spalding said: “It was disappointing, but you’ve got to take the positives out of it – it was a good point away from home.

“I thought they were a good side actually, they passed it around really well, had a few chances and caused us problems.

“But at times we lacked that creative edge and the final ball wasn’t good enough. Looking at clear chances, we didn’t create that many to be honest.

“So overall, it was a good game and we’re happy to get out with a point.”
