FAIRFORD Town made Hellenic League Supplementary Cup progress on Saturday, but manager Jody Bevan said his side should not have needed penalties to secure their passage into the next round.

Bevan’s men drew 1-1 away at Adderbury Park during 90 minutes, and were staring defeat in the face when the hosts had a spot kick to go through, but once that was missed, Fairford did not let another chance to go through slip away and eventually won 6-5 on penalties.

During regular time, Fairford went close on numerous occasions - hitting the post and bar – before Dan Bailey followed up his own shot to slam the visitors in front in the first half.

Adderbury equalised in the second half to punish Fairford for the wastefulness, and the lack of clinical edge from his forwards is what disappointed Bevan most post-match.

He said: “It was a game where we should have been out of sight to be honest.

“We were very much in control of the game for much of it, but we didn’t take our chances once we scored.

“They equalised with what was probably their only serious effort at goal in the second half, and then we couldn’t really respond.

“We kept up the tempo after that, but we couldn’t get that goal to win it.

“It then went to penalties which went on and on and on, and they had a penalty to win it, but they missed and we ultimately managed to get through.”

Bevan felt his team played some of their best stuff throughout the cup tie, only for it to go to waste in the final third.

But the Town boss also admitted he had to tip his cap to the opposition’s defending and said they did an excellent job of frustrating his players.

Bevan said: “We played pretty well in that game and we moved the ball around really nicely, so it wasn’t a case of us not being at the races.

“It was just down to them defending well and we possibly could have been a bit more ruthless, but all in all, I can have no complaints with my team and I’m happy to be through.”

Elsewhere, Shrivenham also secured progression after four different scorers helped them see off Wantage Town development 4-1 at home.

Nick Stanley fired in a free-kick to put the hosts ahead before further goals from Jack Allan and Antonio Gerrish put Shrivvy three goals up before half-time.

Tom Ballard extended the lead in the second half before Wantage’s Development side grabbed a consolation goal in the dying embers.

Meanwhile, Royal Wootton Bassett Town are out following a 3-1 defeat against Hereford Lads Club at the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground.
