ROYAL Wootton Bassett Town manager Sam Collier has set his sights on a charge up the table now the long wait for a first Hellenic League Premier Division win of the season is over.

Bassett triumphed 3-1 at Longlevens on September 25 – their sixth league fixture of the campaign.

They were unable to follow that up with another success last weekend when attention turned to the Hellenic Challenge Cup as Collier’s side fell to a 3-1 defeat at home to Hereford Lads Club.

But with the league programme resuming on Saturday with a home game against Windsor, Collier is optimistic a corner has been turned in regards to Bassett’s fortunes.

“There was a little bit of relief, I am not going to lie,” said Collier.

“I think everyone in the camp was relieved we got that first win. There was a bit of doom and gloom but that has lifted, which is massively pleasing.

“The way we went about it was with real grit and determination and it was a hard-working performance.

“It was the first time this season that we looked like a side that have been together and want to play together, so that’s pleasing.

“We were slightly disappointed that having got that win, four days later we had a cup game. We wanted to keep going.

“It is such an open league and if we win our games in hand, we will be in the top half.

“A lot can happen and everyone can beat everyone else but we are hoping for a run of form now.”

Although Bassett were unable to follow up their Longlevens win with another in the Challenge Cup last weekend, Collier was not too disappointed about that result.

“We want to win every game but we certainly didn’t lose any sleep over not winning last Saturday,” said Collier.

“It probably came at the right time as we have had three or four injuries, so we have managed to get some rest into legs and are now raring to go this weekend.

“Everyone will come back into the squad. Everyone is fit so we will have a full selection to pick from.”

Elsewhere, Fairford Town can climb up to as high as second in the Premier Division table with a win this weekend.

Jody Bevan’s side currently sit fourth and host struggling Holmer Green on Saturday.

Shrivenham complete a clean sweep of home games for teams in the Swindon area as they entertain Ardley United.

Meanwhile, Malmesbury Victoria climbed to the top of the Division One West table in midweek with a 2-1 success at home to Shortwood United.

They now travel to Cheltenham Saracens this weekend.

Finally, bottom side New College are away at Thornbury Town.
