ROYAL Wootton Bassett Town Ladies were frustratingly dumped out of the FA Cup on Sunday after losing 1-0 to South West Premier Division rivals Portishead Town.

James Goddard’s side had already gone further than the club had ever reached before in the competition by going within two games of the first round proper.

But dreams of an appearance against one of the nation’s top teams were killed as Portishead scored the only goal of the game in the second half.

Elsewhere, Swindon Town Women were also dumped out of the FA Cup prematurely as they lost 3-2 at home to Bournemouth.

Helena Diaz-Butcher and Ellie Olds were on target for Town.

There was better news for Swindon Spitfires, though, as they kept up their unbeaten run in the South West Regional Women’s Football League Eastern Division with an emphatic 7-2 victory over Forest Green Rovers.

Spits broke the deadlock in the seventh as Sophie Mitchell’s pass allowed captain Claire Moreton to hit the back of the net.

The lead was 2-0 just a minute later as Mitchell was rewarded with a well-taken strike.

Moreton then got her second goal of the day on the half-hour before another good ball from Mitchell allowed Jas Hindon to get on the act.

Hindon promptly completed her brace after meeting a Moreton pass, although Spits’ hopes of a sixth goal before half-time were denied by an offside flag as Moreton hit the back of the net.

Moreton remained the provider in chief for her side after the break as her corner was fired home by Jasmine Payne.

Although Rovers pulled a goal back, another corner from Moreton saw Debbie Rose head home to bring up Spits’ magnificent seven.

Rovers scored again in the closing stages but it was much too late to deny Spits their win.
