Headteacher Luke Bromwich reached new heights when he took on pupils in a climbing wall challenge as part of his school’s involvement in Outdoor Classroom Day.

All children at St Margaret’s Preparatory School, Calne, took part in the global event aimed at inspiring outdoor learning and play.

An extra dimension was added by a visit of the climbing wall provided by Wiltshire Outdoor Learning as part of a fundraising initiative by Calne Foundation Trust to get a permanent wall in the school sports hall.

National Lottery funding has already raised 60 per cent of the cost of the wall which would also be available for community use.

At the end of the day parents and staff had the chance to take on the wall and Mr Bromwich led by example racing Year 6 pupils to the top.

St Margaret’s Outdoor Learning Co-ordinator Kim Cheadle said the whole day had been a huge success. She said: “We had glorious weather and the day gave us the opportunity to use the whole school grounds for a wide range of cross curricular activities including maths, literacy, art and poetry.

“Everyone had a fantastic time and we have been able to share information on what we did with other schools via the Outdoor Classroom Day website. The children enjoyed seeing Mr Bromwich have a go on the climbing wall.”

St Margaret’s already holds a Learning Outside the Classroom bronze award after impressing assessors in the summer.

Mr Bromwich said: “This was an excellent opportunity for children of all ages at St Margaret’s to learn lessons in a fun environment and to engage with nature.

“Having the climbing wall at the school meant that children could challenge themselves and many of them showed a great deal of courage. I was impressed by how much they supported each other.”

Globally, millions of children took part in the day including more than 500,000 from the UK.
