SWINDON Supermarine took a huge step forward in their quest to reach the Southern League Premier Division play-offs by beating league leaders Chesham away from home on Tuesday night.
Following defeats to promotion hopefuls Truro, Poole and Taunton, hopes of Marine ending the season in the top five frame looked to be fading.
Lee Spalding outlined that fine on-field margins were responsible for those three defeats, something Marine got the better of against Chesham.
Despite going behind with 35 minutes on the board, Marine showed exceptional levels of determination to reverse their one-goal deficit into a one-goal lead.
Michael Hopkins scored from the penalty spot on the hour mark after Harry Williams was fouled.
Just a minute later, Mat Liddiard headed Marine into the lead to silence home supporters.
The win has lifted Marine to fourth in the table, Taunton dropped down to fifth. Chesham are now only six points clear of Marine, who have a game in hand.
Next up for Spalding’s troops is a home game against Met Police on Saturday. Kick off at the Webbswood Stadium is at 3pm.
