STUART Windsor netted a 90th minute winner as Calne Town beat Wincanton Town 2-1 to maintain their lead at the top of Toolstation Division One.

Windsor had recently surpassed 100 goals for the club and wasted little time in making it 101 midway through the first half to put the hosts ahead.

Wincanton equalised just before the hour mark though, and it appeared as if Calne would have to settle for a point.

But after former Corsham Town man Lewis McCarron was brought on for his Calne debut, the talented winger whipped in a cross for Windsor to prod in his second as the clock struck 90.

Co-manager Trevor Porter was delighted to see his side collect all three points but admitted the league leaders were far from their scintillating best in the process.

Porter said: “We got the result we wanted in the end, but we made really hard work of it.

“But our lads keep going until the end, they never give up and that’s what happens when you do that – you score late winners.

“We’ve always tried to drive that into them, that we don’t give up no matter what – whether it’s to snatch a draw or a win, we play until the 90th minute.

“I think we’ve benefited from that attitude a few times this season when we’ve nicked results late.”

Winning goal scorer Windsor has now scored 102 goals in 203 appearances for Calne and has played a significant part in his team’s rise to the top of the table.

Co-manager Porter said the frontman’s experience and positional play is invaluable to the team and hopes to see Windsor continue to crash the goals in for Calne for years to come.

Porter said: “To get 100 goals in 200 appearances at this level is incredible.

“We gave him an award to commemorate his achievement before the game on Saturday, and hopefully there will be a few more goals to come.

“That’s what he does, Stuart, he scores goals for us.

“His hold up play is great too, but he just has that knack of popping up when you need that goal.

“The game is never over with him in the team – whether you’re drawing or losing, with Stuart in the team you always believe you have a chance of getting that goal.

“He’s done it may times over the years for Calne, and we hope he carries on doing it.”
