RICHIE Wellens took a step back to look at the broader view at Swindon Town as he set about leaving Saturday’s defeat in the past.

His side were checked down to second in League Two on goal difference alone by Crewe Alexandra and still boast a game in hand over their nearest rivals above and below.

Though Town suffered their first defeat in five matches at the hands of Forest Green Rovers on Saturday, Wellens felt his side had been the better team and looked to keep a positive outlook on the campaign.

“The most important thing is not to be too critical, not to be too downbeat because we’ve been on a brilliant run since the turn of the year,” he said.

“We’ll lick our wounds and we’ll have to go again.

“Forest Green took their chances, because they only had two on target.

“They pressed us a little bit, but we’ve had 65 per cent possession, we’ve had more shots, we’ve had more crosses.

“In every aspect of the game we did better than them apart from the main one which is the scoreline.”

Early goals in either half with their only two shots on target of the afternoon saw Rovers take the points back across the border to Gloucestershire.

Swindon, on the flip side were unable to put away ample chances of their own to end a seven-match scoring streak.

But more performances of that ilk will earn more points than they lose, according to the Town manager.

“I don’t want to lose any game, but we’ve won before this three on the bounce,” Wellens said.

“Are we going to win every single game? We’re not going to do that.

“When you lose football matches there’s a right way to lose.

“We didn’t give in, we kept going to the very end and tried our very best to score enough goals to win that game.

“Unfortunately it wasn’t enough.

“But I’m quite happy in my mind that if we perform like that nine times out of ten at home then we’ll win the majority of games.”
