MELKSHAM Oak Community school have partially closed as they tell year nine and ten not to attend school today.

They are sending pupils from both years home due to a shortage of staff as more people self-isolate because of the coronavirus.

In a statement on their website Principal Alan Henderson, said: "Dear Parents and Carers, years 9 and 10 should NOT attend school today.

"The Prime Minister has announced that all individuals who live in a household with a person who has a new continuous cough and/or a high temperature should self-isolate for 14 days.

"Following this guidance a significant number of staff at Melksham Oak will not be at work tomorrow. This is precautionary and does not mean they have symptoms or coronavirus.

"The impact of this means that due to staffing limitations we are unable to offer a full curriculum across all year groups. I have therefore taken the difficult decision to suspend onsite learning to years 9 and 10. The school will remain open for years 7, 8, 11, 12 and 13.

"Parents of students in years 9 and 10 should expect to receive further communication about home learning which students are expected to complete. Your patience and support is greatly appreciated."

The school are keeping their pupils updated with more information when they have it.

Mr Henderson gave an update on Twitter today (March 17).

He said: "We are also sending staff home who have underlying health issues or if they live with someone who does, even if they are not presenting with any symptoms.

"We will make a decision about any further school closure based on what is best for our students and staff."
