A DRAMATIC seven-mile chase, during which a car reverse-rammed a police pursuit vehicle, ended in two arrests on Wednesday night.
The drama began when officers in an unmarked car began to follow a Jaguar E-Pace believed to be involved in drug supply around 9pm. The vehicle was spotted at the Bridge Centre roundabout in Chippenham, and was followed towards Derry Hill, where a marked police car then attempted to stop it.
But when officers approached the driver, the Jaguar reverse-rammed one of the police cars and made off in the direction of Sandy Lane.
Police followed and the pursuit continued through Sandy Lane, when a number of items were seen to be thrown from the car as it continued at speed before joining the A3102 towards Calne.
The Jaguar eventually came to a stop in Azalea Close, Calne, and two people were detained.
Police later said cannabis, a mobile phone and drugs paraphernalia were seized from the vehicle and a large quantity of cannabis was found by officers when they retraced the route of the pursuit.
A man in his 20s from Devizes was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, failing to stop, taking a vehicle without consent, driving without a licence, driving without insurance, drug-driving and possession with intent to supply class B drugs.
An 18-year-old woman from Devizes was arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply class B drugs.
Both remain in Melksham custody for further questioning.
Det Insp Paul Franklin said: “Despite officers stopping this vehicle in Derry Hill, the driver continued to drive at excess speed and dangerously before eventually coming to a stop in a dead end in Calne. Fortunately, there were very few other vehicles on the road at the time of the incident and no road users were injured, however, it could have been a very different story. “This incident shows that officers will continue to target those individuals who are involved in suspected drug activity despite the very uncertain times we find ourselves in. These people were also showing complete disregard for the government guidelines to stay at home and are putting further demand on emergency services at an already busy time.”
Anyone who saw the Jaguar being driven from Chippenham to Calne should call 101 and quote crime reference number 54200031659.
