One of the few positives in amidst the COVID-19 crisis is the creation of volunteer neighbourhood networks in local communities such as Sherston. When lockdown looked imminent, Parish Councillor Martin Smith worked with a small team to quickly set up Sherston’s Neighbourhood Network. Since then, over 130 people have volunteered to help vulnerable people with shopping, picking up prescriptions and ringing to check they are ok. Network co-organiser, Caroline Moore, worked with the Mid-Counties Co-op in the village and the local pharmacy at Tolsey Surgery to ensure the smooth running of the process. They have also been delivering meals to those who have been isolating or just need a bit of cheering up - generously provided by Calcot Manor Hotel. Over 320 meals have been provided so far, with Nic Fisher, another Parish Councillor, doing a lot of the driving. Martin Smith said “The deeper sense of community that groups like this have created is really heartening. Even in a close-knit community like ours, I’ve heard many stories of neighbours meeting and talking for the first time.” He added “This network will continue for as long as it’s needed.”
