THERE was a significant fall in serious or fatal road traffic collisions on the roads of Wiltshire and Swindon during the second quarter of this year.

Wiltshire & Swindon Police and Crime Commissioner Angus Macpherson said: “I undertake regular reviews of road traffic incidents where there is death or serious injury and figures for the last quarter are down by 55 per cent.

"Sadly, however, 10 people aged between 17 and 84 have lost their lives on our roads in Wiltshire and Swindon this year with an average age of just 56.

“As the weather improves with the season we have seen an increase in accidents involving motor cyclists and cyclists.

"More people took to the roads to cycle and walk during the period of lockdown and have continued to do so since the Covid-19 restrictions have been eased. I urge all road users to be careful and be aware of others.”

“You will have noticed over the past few weeks Our Roads Policing unit have been supporting a number of national and local initiatives that make up the fatal four. These are speeding, drink/drug driving, using a mobile phone and not wearing a seatbelt while driving.”

“This week Roads Policing and Community policing will be paying particular attention to drink driving as more pubs will be opening their doors for the first time since the restrictions were eased on July 4.

"It is regrettable that it is necessary to repeat the message time and time again that drink and drugs should never be combined with driving.

"If you wish to go out for an alcoholic drink please leave the car keys at home and travel by other means.”
