Wiltshire Council is appealing to businesses and event organisers to postpone or cancel events planned in the county for the remainder of the year.

The majority of major gatherings of more than six people are currently prohibited, other than the exemptions outlined in new government regulations, including weddings, funerals and organised sports.

Philip Whitehead, leader of the council said: “We are strongly recommending local businesses and event organisers take this course of action to help protect the health of local residents.

“We can see the impact full local lockdowns have on local communities and businesses and, working with public health, we are doing all we can to try and prevent this from happening in Wiltshire. Local organisations have acted responsibly throughout the coronavirus pandemic and we are asking them to continue doing just that.

“We know this plea may be a blow to some organisers and residents, especially as it quickly follows recent requirements for some venues to restrict their opening hours and remain closed to the public between 10pm and 5am, but the safety of our communities must come first.

"It is really unfortunate that we are unable to support events at this time. If the number of cases reduce as a result of the rule of 6 and other Covid guidance and regulations, then we will review this recommendation.

“By working together and continuing to follow the government advice, we will be able to once again enjoy fantastic local and safe experiences and events in Wiltshire."

Businesses are encouraged to continue taking the necessary steps to remain Covid-19 secure which will provide greater confidence to their customers that their safety is being taken seriously resulting in customers more likely to make a return visit.

Residents can play their part too by following the rule of 6 and social distancing measures in place and limit how many different people they see socially over a short period of time to help protect each other and prevent the spread of Covid-19.

Local authorities have new powers to prohibit events from taking place, if they present a risk to public health.
