The next set of works to improve access to Chippenham Railway Station starts this week.

Improvements are being made to the pedestrian crossing at the A420 Bristol Road and Hardenhuish Lane junction.

This is the latest scheme in the £1.98 million investment to improve pedestrian and cyclist access to the station.

The works, starting on Thursday October 22 will involve the replacement of the existing pelican crossing with a new toucan crossing installed in its place.

To ensure the safe flow of traffic and pedestrians, four-way temporary traffic signals with a temporary pedestrian facility will be in operation throughout the works.

The footpath will be temporarily closed, but an alternative diversion will be provided for pedestrians. Local businesses will remain open and will continue to operate as normal.

Cllr Bridget Wayman, Cabinet Member for Highways, said: “We have planned for these improvements to be carried out during the school half term period, when there is generally less traffic, and to minimise any inconvenience to road users.

"The works will start on the last day of the school term and the contractor will work from 8am to 4pm throughout the period, including the weekend if needed, to ensure the crossing is ready for public use before the pupils return from their half term break.”

These schemes include new shared pedestrian and cyclist paths on Langley Road and between Cocklebury Road and the new Sadlers Mead car park entrance, a new toucan crossing to replace the existing zebra crossing on Cocklebury Road, cycle improvements at the junction of Little George/Old Road and the conversion of a mini roundabout to a signalled controlled junction at Western Arches/Station Hill.

The works are part of the £16 million Station Hub project, funded by the Swindon and Wiltshire Local Enterprise Partnership.
