Highworth Town were beaten 5-0 by Frome Town in Southern League Division One South on Tuesday night

A brace from Frome’s Kane Simpson, as well as strikes from Jack Witcombe, James Ollis and a Dan Comer own-goal made sure John Fisher and Ross Adams’ men came back down to earth with a bump following successive wins.

With first-team regulars Connor Johns and Joe Selman unavailable through injury, a patched up Worthians outfit headed to Somerset with hopes of stealing a positive result.

However, within four minutes, the visitors were already behind after Simpson converted a right-wing cross to put Frome a goal up.

The impressive Simpson could have had a hat-trick inside the first 15 minutes as his next effort hit the side netting after being forced wide by keeper Luke Kuczynski – the Frome striker also headed wide when well placed early on.

On a night of few Highworth chances, Callum Parsons saw an effort gathered at the second attempt by home goalkeeper Max Evans midway through the first half.

But despite the home side’s dominance throughout the first 45 minutes, Highworth reached half-time only a goal down.

Kuczynski did well to block another Simpson effort following the re-start before Highworth saw claims for a handball inside Frome’s penalty area waved away by the referee.

Highworth then saw another good chance to equalise fade away as versatile defender, Leon Morrison just failed to control a Parsons free-kick with the goal at his mercy.

With those chances not capitalised on, however, Fisher and Adams’ men were duly punished as the second half ticked on.

Witcombe netted his first goal for his hometown club, as the full-back just about evaded a Highworth defender to tap Nathan Davies’ cross home before Simpson grabbed his second with an excellent strike.

The Frome striker hit the post moments later with a hat-trick at his mercy, though it would not matter too much as Davies saw another good cross headed into his own net by Comer.

Frome’s James Ollis completed the scoring as time expired.
