A DESPERATE appeal by the Saxon Riding for the Disabled Group at Bradford on Avon to find new homes for some of its horses looks to be ending on a happy note.

Three of the group's three horses have been found new homes and complete strangers have boosted its coffers with donations following an appeal for help.

Kady Chatman, the Saxon RDA Group's leader, said: "It's been absolutely amazing.

"I've had emails and phone calls from people I don't know and hopefully the horses have been sorted now."

An online auction organised by seven-year-old Saxon RDA rider Maddie Thornton from Bradford on Avon raised a much-needed £725 to help feed the horses.

The charity also set up an online gofundme appeal which has so far raised a further £805 in donations from sympathisers in just a few days.

Mrs Chatman said: "I think we've found homes for all the horses now. Caellyn Haf has already gone to Edington, and Jacko is going to Farrington Gurney.

"I have met someone who wants to provide a new home for Stanley at Whitley. I'm pretty confident that we're going to find homes for all the horses."

The group was faced with financial disaster following the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown after suffering a dramatic drop in income.

Because of inactivity, three of its four horses developed conditions which needed veterinary treatment and rest.

The only one fit and well enough to ride is the group's newest horse, Saxon, while a fifth horse, Flo, had to be put to sleep because of illness.

Mrs Chatman said: "The story in the Wiltshire Times really touched people and the support has been really lovely.

"It has made a real difference to us and has really struck a chord with people. Certainly, the donations we have received is going to see us through the winter."
