SWINDON Robins co-promoter Lee Kilby has offered thanks for the understanding and support shown to the club following their withdrawal from the 2021 season.

Kilby, who has just recovered from Covid-19 after struggling throughout January, says the reaction has helped soften the blow.

And he says everyone connected with the club must keep a positive outlook ahead of the 2022 campaign.

He said: “I have to say that in this time of such uncertainty caused by the pandemic the news of our withdrawal has been met with great understanding by the British Speedway Promoters Ltd and fans alike.

“As a club we’re extremely grateful for everyone’s support. When all things are taken into consideration, we must respect Terry Russell and Steve Park for making a very hard decision.

“It’s a decision they know affects the lives of so many people. Ultimately putting our licence on ice for what would have been a very tricky and complicated 2021 season for the club will safeguard our future.”

Kilby, whose father Bob was a firm favourite as a rider with the club, admits another year without the sport will be tough – but better times are ahead.

“Like everyone I’m disappointed with the prospect of not having the Robins in my life for another yea,” he said. “But I’ve never lived with a glass half empty, and I am already looking forward toward 2022 and the huge game changing scenario that will bring us.

“Club director Steve Park made a statement on January 14 outlining the positive communications and ongoing planning with Stadia UK regarding stadium development.

“Steve highlighted that if all things go to schedule, we’ll see stadium work start in the summer. As soon as we have any updates on the development, we’ll pass these on to our supporters.

“In the meantime I’d like to ask everyone to try ad remain upbeat, positive and to continue the feel good factor of winning the double in 2019 as we wait for racing to return.”
