SWINDON Town assistant manager Tommy Wright praised his side for showing guts and determination after a late Scott Twine strike secured a 2-1 victory at home to Crewe Alexandra on Saturday.

Town made their usual slow start at the County Ground and went a goal down inside the first five minutes when Tom Lowery tapped in Mikael Mandron’s low cross.

John Sheridan’s men almost immediately recovered though when Travis Johnson headed past Dave Richards into his own net in the 10th minute.

Two excellent Joe Wollacott saves, and some questionable finishing from Crewe, gave Town hope that they might be able to escape with a point before a lovely team goal saw Twine finish deep into added time.

Reacting to a result that saw Swindon rise out of the bottom four, Wright seemed a little surprised his men had managed to snatch victory from a decent Crewe outfit.

Asked afterwards how his team managed it, Wright said: “That’s a good question. We stuck in there.

“I think everyone saw Crewe were probably the better team, and the most threatening team, but the important thing for us is that we dug in, we kept going and kept believing – and we got the winning goal.”

With one win in the club’s last seven before Saturday, Wright said confidence among the players was understandably low before the game against Crewe.

The 55-year-old revealed he was happy to see his players well up for the fight in a tough game played in difficult conditions.

He said: “The goal in the first half was probably the first lucky break we’ve had in a while really. We just dug in there really.

“We told the players they’ve just got to stay in matches, we know it’s probably a league between seven teams that are down there.

“We showed some guts today because we kept going.

“It wasn’t a great performance, but you’ve got to understand they’re human beings – the confidence is a bit low – but you’ve got to have that desire to keep going, and we did because we got the winning goal.”
