An 11-year-old girl has appeared in court - making her the youngest person to face charges in Wiltshire in the last six months.

The data was gathered from all records supplied by the courts on defendants in England and Wales in the last six months.

The girl, who is from Swindon, but cannot be identified for legal reasons, has faced charges of assault and actual bodily harm to another female.

She appeared before the County of Wiltshire Youth Court on June 8, where she was remanded on unconditional bail until a date in early July.

The defence requested a possible conditional caution and no plea was entered.

She is among 11 other children aged between 11 and 13 across England and Wales to have been before magistrates on a range of charges.

The age of criminal responsibility in England and Wales is 10 years old.

This means that children under 10 can't be arrested or charged with a crime.

Children between 10 and 17 can be arrested and taken to youth court if they commit a crime.

There are other punishments that can be given to children under 10 who break the law.

The rules are different in Scotland, where the age of criminal responsibility is 8 years old.
