WILTSHIRE produced an excellent all-round performance to defeat Breconshire in their latest Inter County Championship Division Four league match at the Phoenex Bar, Wootton Bassett.

Jill Little took the opening match before defeats for Karen Hutton and Ally Harrison gave Breconshire a 2-1 lead.

Wiltshire then finished the Ladies B section strongly with wins for Ally Thomson, Jan Murphy and lady of the match Heather Lane and led 4-2 going into the men’s section.

Wiltshire B men have been fantastic all season long and on Saturday were so again. Bob Phillips and a 154 game shot got the county off to a perfect start and was followed with wins for Pete Harris and Ian Greenaway.

John Newland then produced an excellent man of the match performance to move Wiltshire into an 8-2 lead. Gary Ellis was then very unlucky to lose to an excellent Breconshire player who was to win again in the A section match on Sunday.

Wiltshire then took the next four matches with wins for Terry Smith, Mick Duggan, Chris Bailey and Mark Hocking before a rare Rob Higginson defeat.

Paul Boulton and David Gould then completed the day’s action with good wins and Wiltshire led 14-4 overnight.

An early start on Sunday saw Rachel Hutton demolish her opponent in the opening match before Tina Rowlands lost a fantastic match against Natalie Evans despite a 23-plus average.

Erica Hartnett was defeated as was Carol Bowers but with wins for Jo Hooke and Ann Paget, Wiltshire led 17-7 going into the Men’s A matches.

Tony Clark lost the opening game and an off-day for Bob Bowers reduced the lead to eight.

Ron Ashton then won a last leg decider to get Wiltshire back on track.

Three unbelievable performances followed from Steve Willard, man of the match Mark Cox and brilliant teenager Chris Aubrey. All three produced averages in excess of 30 and all left the stage to rapturous applause from an impressed audience.

However, Wiltshire then lost the next four games with defeats for Richard Ettwell, Juan Hopkins, Richie Jones and Lee Hussey before Dave Wicks and Chris Daglish finished with wins to make the final score 23-13.

Added with three win bonus points, the final tally of 26 was good enough to send Wiltshire up into third place in the table and with a game in hand on the top two teams, promotion is still achievable.
