WARMINSTER stretched their unbeaten Dorset and Wilts One North run to three games at the weekend when downing a depleted Royal Wootton Bassett 2nd 28-0.

After grinding out a thrilling 24-24 draw at Melksham in the final game of last year, Warminster started the new year in fine style when defeating Pewsey Vale by 12 points away from home.

And that positive run continued for Saturday’s hosts, who never looked like dropping points.

Both teams aimed to make quick starts, before Bassett were ultimately caught out when Jason Sprangle put the home side ahead with a penalty.

Sprangle doubled his tally minutes later to put Warminster six points ahead before they asserted their dominance on the game to put a result beyond the visitors’ reach mid-way through the opening half.

A cross-field kick in the direction of winger Ross Williams looked to have done enough to help the hosts register their first try of the game, but it was ruled out by the officials who deemed that the play had ran out of play.

Warminster’s ill-fortune was to only last for a few moments though as a quick ball from the resulting penalty was picked up by centre Sikeli Rokovunicagi.

Rokovunicagi sidestepped his markers to score a well-worked try, however the conversion was missed by Sprangle.

The Amber and Blues soon added to their try tally when hooker Dean Priestman charged through a series of tackles to power over the line despite starting 10 metres out.

Leading 16-0, the game was stopped as a Bassett player was hurt in the process of the try – forcing the game to conclude on a different pitch.

Half an hour later, the game resumed. And Warminster continued to dominate play despite some dogged defending by the home back line.

Pressure on the visitors eventually led to Warminster rounding off the game with two tries courtesy of Williams, one of which was a result of a fantastic assist from outside centre Dan McIntyre.

The result ensures Warminster remain fourth while Bassett dropped down to seventh following Minety’s 50-0 win at home against Supermarine.

Elsewhere, Melksham claimed a 22-12 win at home to Sutton Benger on Friday night.

Despite the visitors making a quick start, Melksham registered a try through Jamie Shipman to lead by three points at half time before markers from Callum Hurn and Luke Cador added to the home side’s tally - leaving them third in the league.
