DEBBIE Shadwell, who plays her bowls out of west Wiltshire club Box, is enjoying probably her best season at county level since taking up the sport nearly 20 years ago.

The Trowbridge resident had already reached the finals of two of the main national county championship events before reaching a third last week.

Together with Box colleagues Jane Taylor, Jean Collier and skip Michele Williams, Shadwell qualified for the county ladies’ fours final back in mid-May. A week later along with Sue Cooke and skip Alex Jacobs, she reached the triples final.

Then last Saturday at Salisbury, Shadwell completed a hat-trick of county ladies’ final appearances with club colleague Kathryn Yeoman by qualifying in the pairs.

By reaching these three county finals, Shadwell will represent Wiltshire in the latter stages of fours, triples and pairs at the national championships to be held at Victoria Park, Royal Leamington Spa in August.

In the pairs quarter-finals held at Salisbury, Shadwell and Yeoman were drawn in the bottom half of the draw.

In their opening match, they cruised past Spencer Melksham pair Delia Godwin and Marilyn Jay 24-8.

In the semis, they faced a Highworth pair who had thumped Trowbridge Westbourne duo Jenny Oliver and Maureen Routledge 25-10.

The Box duo were well dialled as they almost hit the 30-shot mark to beat county Johns Trophy colleagues Jo Hicks and Linda Young 29-14 to book their place at county ladies’ finals day at Bradford-on-Avon on July 27.

In the final, they will face Stratton Churchway duo Jackie Pearce and Janet Willis, who progressed from the top half of the draw after edging past Chippenham Town duo Viv Baskerville and Barbara Land 20-18 and then thrashing a new pairs combination from Westlecot of Kay Webb and Sue Fletcher 26-5 in the semis.

Attention now turns the county ladies’ national singles event that commenced in the northern section on Monday with games in the north and south sections due to be played on Friday.

Shadwell has won this event previously in 2013 and she will be seeking to reach another final at Bradford-on-Avon and complete an impressive four-timer.
