DEVIZES Town caretaker manager Darran Walters revealed he has not ruled out taking his old job back on a permanent basis following a 0-0 draw at home to Bishop Sutton in Toolstation League Division One on Saturday, writes JONATHAN LEIGHFIELD.

Walters and fellow joint-manager Tom Perkins were in charge of the west Wiltshire club before stepping down at the end of last season – citing erratic player availability as one of the primary frustrations behind only being able to guide the club to 11th place in the table.

But after Devizes announced they would be parting company with recently-appointed Rob Broadbank last week, the duo were placed in temporary charge until a permanent replacement could be found.

And when asked whether he would consider stepping back into the role that he only left in May, Walters said: “I can’t say yes or no for definite just yet.

“Football is a results business, so if you’re doing well, you’re more tempted to stay on than if you’re not.

“But we’re just here to steady the ship at the moment, we’re happy to be at the club for as long as the club needs us, and we’ll see where it takes us.”

Walters’ first game in caretaker charge ended in a stalemate as defensive duties were placed at a premium in an attempt to ‘stop the bleeding’ that has all too often occurred in games this season, according to the Town boss.

The Devizes manager was pleased with a point and a clean sheet in his first game in charge, but still admitted it felt like ‘two points dropped’ given his team had chances to win it.

Walters said: “We’ve seen a few games recently, and me and Tom (Perkins) felt we’d been conceding too many goals.

“We wanted to tighten up at the back, which we did, and that was pleasing.

“All in all, I wasn’t too disappointed with the result.

“A win would have been nice – it feels a little bit like two points dropped – but we’re happy we didn’t lose the game and it’s a good place to start for us.”

Walters’ next league game in charge comes on Saturday when Devizes travel to Portishead Town.

The manager is hoping to draft a few new faces in before then as he begins to rebuild the club following weeks of confidence ebbing away.

Walters said: “We’re down near the bottom of the table and confidence is a little bit low.

“The squad is a little bit thin on the ground now, so we need to try and get a few players in to improve the quality and quantity of what we’ve got available.

“Every game in that league is a winnable game – nothing frightens me anymore – so it’s just a case of building some confidence and hopefully those wins will come over the next few weeks.”

Elsewhere, Calne Town moved clear at the top of the table courtesy of an impressive 3-1 win at home to Wells City.

Jamal Chevolleau scooped a hat-trick as Ben Redford’s side came from 1-0 down to topple one of the pre-season favourites for promotion.

Corsham Town played out a thrilling 3-3 draw away at Ashton & Blackwell United that saw the hosts snatch a draw in the 90th minute.

Luke Curtis and Josh Bright put the visitors two goals up early on before United levelled before half-time.

Josh Hard nudged Corsham in front once again before Ashton equalised late on to rescue a point.
