ONLY four matches survived the conditions last weekend in The Trowbridge Windows and Conservatories sponsored Trowbridge and District Football League, but the weekend before Christmas produced a feast of goals with the sound of the ball hitting the net ringing out a remarkable 25 times.

DIVISION ONE

With Calne Town Reserves match falling to the weather, KEW PR FC took full advantage to close the gap on the leaders with a 2 – 0 victory over Freshford United. In the 14th minute Scott Baker found Nick Ross with a neat pass back from the by-line to open the scoring. On the half hour mark Ross returned the favour when he nicked the ball from a defender and laid the ball on for Baker who curled the ball into the top corner of the net from 20 yards out. Freshford battled back well but could not break an excellent KEW defence well marshalled by the veteran Jake Gaines and Alfie Little. The result keeps KEW PR second in The Trowbridge Windows and Conservatories sponsored Division One, a single point behind Calne Town Reserves but with a game in hand.

Hilperton United will go into the new year sitting in third place in The Trowbridge Windows and Conservatories sponsored Division One but were made to fight all the way for the points against Heytesbury winning a topsy-turvy game 5 – 4. Ben Spong led the way for Hilperton grabbing a hat- trick with a long-distance rocket from Rhys Fricker and a penalty from Liam Milburn completing the scoring in a match where Hilperton were behind four times before finding a way to win. A brace apiece from Chris Bridle and Mike Payne scored for Heytesbury who could count themselves unlucky in not gaining a first league win this season.

DIVISION TWO

The promotion and title race is really warming up in The Trowbridge Windows and Conservatories sponsored Division Two. With Westbury United Reserves and Staverton not playing Calne Eagles kept themselves right in the frame with a 5 – 2 win against The Stiffs. In a game of two halves, the opening period was looking goalless until Eagles were awarded a penalty in the 42nd minute. The Stiffs keeper stood firm and saved Adam Welch’s spot kick, but Welch followed up and slotted home the rebound to give Eagles a half-time advantage. Eagles won another penalty at the beginning of the second half and this times Jake Mizen sent the keeper the wrong way to increase the lead. Adam Welch made it 3 – 0 with a shot from outside the box that fizzed into the bottom corner before Ben Fielding pulled one back for The Stiffs. Brett Cullen restored Calne’s three goal lead then Fielding scored his second to keep The Stiffs in with a shout before Karl Sharratt managed to squeeze a header in at the far post to round off the scoring and secure the points for The Eagles. Calne Eagles sit in third place in the league with an identical record with second place Staverton United, both teams are a point behind Westbury United Reserves with a game in hand.

Seend United picked up their first win of the season in an entertaining 4 – 3 win from their visit to Potterne. Two goals from Harry Waylen and a strike each from Josh Thornton and Billy Hawkins gave Seend a welcome first victory. Andrew Fisher, Jamie Bayes, and Ash Huntley were on the scoresheet for Potterne.
