SWINDON Town head coach Ben Garner says the club will take its time to make sure Jordan Lyden comes back 100 per cent fit and ready to play following the midfielder’s latest break down.

After suffering with a thigh problem over the summer, Lyden came off injured during the first half of Swindon’s 1-0 pre-season friendly defeat to Weymouth on July 31.

The setback has ruled Lyden out for a few weeks – according to the club’s head coach – but instead of trying to rush him back amid Town’s desire for experienced, senior professionals in the match day squad, Garner revealed he is going to give the 25-year-old as much time as he needs to regain confidence in his body.

Speaking after Town’s defeat to Peterborough United in League Two side’s final pre-season friendly, Garner said: “Jordan had a little thigh injury before we came in – an issue with his quad – and he aggravated that against Weymouth last Saturday.

“He’s going to be out for a little while, certainly a few weeks. But we’re going to take the opportunity with Jordan to really try and get him right physically.

“So not just that injury but treat this time as almost an MOT for his full body. If it takes a little bit longer to get him back, we’ll take the time.

“We want to get him right for himself because he’s confident when he plays at full tilt and when he’s confident in his body, and if we have to take a week or two longer to do that, we will do that.”

Trialist Harry McKirdy was another to occupy the treatment room after Saturday’s friendly defeat, but Garner believes it should be a matter of days rather than weeks before the tricky winger returns to action.

Discussing his group of current trialists, the Town head coach said he will start to make decisions this week on who will be offered a contract at the County Ground.

Garner said: “Harry got a knock to the back of his leg in the first half on Saturday, so I wouldn’t imagine that would be too serious. Fingers crossed that will be days rather than anything longer than that.

“As far as the trialists go, we’ll keep the other names to ourselves at the moment.

“We’re under certain restrictions with the embargo that we’ve got to give careful consideration to.

“It’s a game of chess at the moment where every move is important, so we’re doing as much due diligence as we can to try and get as many of those moves right.”
