SWINDON Town head coach Ben Garner says he remains focused on the here and now and is asking his team to try and be ‘perfect’ for the final four games of the season.

Town will likely need to win at least three of their final four games while also requiring a favour from more than one other team to reach the top seven.

Because of that, Swindon are ranked as ninth favourites to sneak in and complete the job for promotion as things stand.

Some have suggested Garner would be forgiven for turning attention towards next season and only operating with players who definitely have a future at the club.

Stating he would never give up and still remains committed to achieving promotion this season, Garner said: “We’re always looking to build for the future, that’s an ongoing process.

“But our focus is very much on these next four games. We’ve got to try and take 12 points.

“The players want to do well. They’ve been great all season, it’s just that whenever we give ourselves an opportunity we’re not taking that next step – we need to find a way to do that.

“There are still 12 points to play for, I’m certain 12 points will get us in the play-offs. That’s got to be our focus, and we’ll have to be perfect between now and the end of the season.”

Chasing perfection from young players is a tough ask, admitted Garner, who went on to discuss a role model in his squad.

Louis Reed, who is up for Player Of The Year, was a classic example of what the 41-year-old wants to see from his Town squad – especially during home games.

He said: “I don’t think there’s a lack of effort, I can’t fault how they are in training or how they prepare. We’ve just got to have a better mentality in these home games.

“I thought Louis Reed was fantastic in the second half (against Leyton Orient). That’s the type of personality that we want, someone who is a winner, someone who is driven and wants to succeed. He kept pushing and pushing, and he was a real leader in that second half.

“A lot of these are young players. I think, after Scunthorpe, we’re the youngest team in the league.

“So they’re always learning and adding things all the time, but they’re thing we want to add quickly because we want to succeed and we want to do well as a football club.”
