SWINDON Town head coach Ben Garner said the club will not be attempting to re-sign striker Tyreece Simpson this summer.

The 19-year-old spent a highly successful loan spell at the County Ground during the first half of the season, netting 11 times and providing three assists in 30 appearances.

Simpson was recalled to parent club Ipswich Town in January in order to resolve a contract dispute, but the situation at Portman Road became complicated and the striker was left to train in the Tractor Boys’ reserves instead of seeing out the next few months with Swindon.

Having recently informed Ipswich that he wants to leave as soon as possible, Simpson will no doubt be courted by a number of interested parties throughout the Football League and beyond.

However, with his contract containing a one-year extension clause, the transfer fee for which his services will command appear to have priced Swindon out of the running.

Asked if he was aware of Simpson’s ‘come-and-get-me’ plea earlier this week, Garner said: “I haven’t seen that, but we just wouldn’t be in that market.

“That’s going to require a transfer fee, and that’s not a position we’re in as a football club at the moment.

“I’d just like to see Tyreece kick on in his career now. He came here and did great, and he’s got the potential and ability to do great things in the game whether that’s at Ipswich or whether that’s somewhere else.

“I’d just like to see him make the most of his talent and potential moving forwards.”

Swindon’s current transfer embargo is expected to be lifted at the end of the season, therefore the club would be able to pay transfer fees for players from July 1.

Whether Simpson is still available at that point and whether the Swindon hierarchy believe it worthwhile to pay money for him is of course unknown at this point.

It is also worth considering that Town might be able to afford a certain amount of transfer fee before they are priced out of the running.

But after a slow start to life at SN1, the majority of fans came to be extremely proud of the teenager’s performances and would love to see him return on a permanent deal in the summer.

Only Town’s recruitment team really know how likely that is, but based on Garner’s recent comments it appears to be quite far-fetched.
