SWINDON Town striker Harry McKirdy says he and his teammates are desperate to avoid watching another team go up via the play-offs and will gladly postpone their summer holidays if it means they achieve promotion at Wembley.

McKirdy’s Town take on Forest Green Rovers at the County Ground on Tuesday night knowing victory could take them into the top seven while defeat may mean the play-offs all but disappear.

It was a similar situation at the weekend before the 25-year-old netted a brace as Town beat Hartlepool United 3-0 to remain two points outside the play-off places.

McKirdy said he and his teammates would prefer a different kind of pressure to the one they’re currently under but vowed to fight on in order to reach the hallowed turf of Wembley Stadium.

He said: “I’d rather be in fourth place with it secured and we’re trying to get the automatic places.

“But look, I’ve been in teams where you’re at this stage of the season and all you’re looking at is being on holiday.

“We’ve said to the boys, “it’s been a long season and we all want to go on holiday, but do you really want to be on holiday and watch someone like Sutton get promoted at Wembley?” None of us want that.

“We’re all going to go on holiday at some point, let’s go together as a group after we’ve been promoted at Wembley.”

After McKirdy added two more first-time finishes to his catalogue of goals this season, Mathieu Baudry headed in to maintain Town’s promotion hopes against Hartlepool on Saturday.

After the win, the striker revealed the goal has always been to go up, despite pre-season expectations surrounding survival being completely acceptable.

McKirdy said: “We still believe we can do it. We said in our huddle before the game on Saturday: “don’t let the season end today.”

“I think if we had lost on Saturday then the season would have been over. If we lose against Forest Green on Tuesday, there is a possibility that the season could be over.

“We don’t want the season to be over, we all want to get promoted. That’s been our goal since the first game at Scunthorpe.

“We just need to keep that dream alive for as long as possible. We slipped up quite a bit recently, but we’ve still got a chance. All we can do is get nine points and hope that’s enough to get in.”
