MATT Swales produced a remarkable two days’ golf to clinch both the Wiltshire County Championship and Colts Championships with two course records at Chippenham and Marlborough golf clubs.

The Cumberwell Park player produced record low marks at the two venues to comfortably carry off both prizes.

Swales opened up with a magnificent 61 in the Colts’ event at Chippenham on day one, lowering Ali James’ mark by two strokes and even bettering the professional record of Graham Laing.

Incredibly, he missed a three-foot putt for birdie at the opener, only for the blow to fire him up. Subsequently, he reeled off a succession of birdies, parring just one in an outward half of 28.

The fireworks ceased coming home, but Swales parred his way out of trouble and added another birdie at 17 to set his new record.

Leading the morning chase was Broome Manor’s Tom Burley, who shot 65 but both he and Swales hit trouble in the afternoon, falling away to 73 and 74 in their respective second rounds.

West Wilts’ Andy Rideout added a level par 69 to his morning 68 including a stunning albatross with his final shot of the day - a 5 iron to the par five ninth - to close the gap, but Swales was still two shots clear and claimed the Colts’ title.

North Wilts’ Gary Slade was third Colt home with rounds of 72 and 69, with Wrag Barn’s Josh Loughrey (68 and 74) next. Bowood’s Jordan Smith (68 and 75) and Marlborough’s Ben Amor (72 and 72) made up the top six.

Taking his lead into day two at Marlborough for the final half of the overal County Championship, Swales seemed to have blown his chances when he faltered to a 79, as none of the field broke par in the third round.

Burley meanwhile, steadied himself with a 74 as he grabbed a two-shot advantage to take into the afternoon’s final round.

There, despite managing only one of four sub-par rounds - a respectable 71 - Burley was unable to close out victory.

The host club’s Paul Green fired a 69 to move inside the top 10 - but he was again outshone as Swales completed a title double with a flourish.

Sinking a birdie on the par five opening hole, he went on to birdie the other four long holes and a faultless card, including four more birdies and an eagle on the par four 16th, gave him a magnificent nine under par 63 and another course record.

It gave him an aggregate total of 277, five under par, and a six-shot success over Burley.

Burley’s Broome Manor clubmate Tom Ruddle (289) was a further six shots back in third, followed by Loughrey (290), Slade (293), Smith and Marlborough’s David Bauer (both 294).

Wiltshire vice-skipper Kevin Phillips ended on 299 while there was a standout performance from the youngest player in the field, Marlborough 13-year-old Ben Amor.

The son of Marlborough pro Simon Amor, he made the halfway cut with two 72s at Chippenham before adding an 80 and 79 on his own course. That saw him finish 14th, tied with county captain James.
