WHEN it comes to all-around sporting achievement, there must be few who can keep up with the exploits of GEORGE LEWIS – one of the finalists in the Junior Sportsperson of the Year award, sponsored by Places for People Leisure.

The 12-year-old, who goes to Hardenhuish School in Chippenham, has actively participated in football, cricket and athletics and represented clubs, representative sides and schools across Wiltshire not only in the last year but also in the previous five years.

After joining FC Chippenham Youth FC as a six-year-old, in 2014 the goalkeeper was selected to represent FC Wiltshire in the Junior Premier League. He excelled in the 2016/17 season, picking up five man-of-the-match medals and helping the team reach the semi-finals of the U12 Junior Premier League Cup.

He has represented Goatacre Cricket Club since the age of eight and during the summer played at U13, U15 and fourth XI adult level, as well as captaining the Wiltshire North East district U13 team. Lewis captained the team to the runners-up spot in the county cup final, while Goatacre were crowned Friday night T20 and Sunday 30-over champions.

Lewis is also an accomplished middle-distance athlete for his school.

Littleton Panell gymnast JESSICA DAYKIN is making an impact at national level.

The Wiltshire School of Gymnastics competitor was selected for the England squad based on her results from this year’s English Championships.

She came eighth overall in the junior section despite a fall on the beam, the best result by a county gymnast for many years and was crowned the British Challenge Cup junior champion this year.

The teenager, who trains for more than 25 hours a week, was also the champion on beam, bars and floor and achieved the score to allow her to compete in the 2018 British Championships, which will be held in Liverpool.

Swindon’s MAX COOK has been dominant in the 2017 British Superbike (BSB) Moto3 standard class Championship, winning 15 out of 22 races and sewing up the British Championship with four races to go.

He also wrapped up the Cool-FAB British Junior Supermoto Championship this year.

Cook has been invited to join the Red Bull Rookies Championship next year, widely recognised as the first step towards MotoGP.

One of 10 chosen riders and the only one from Britain, Wilson Racing rider Cook, aged 14, has also been invited to ride in the Dorna-endorsed British Talent Cup next year, which is another feeder championship to world level.

The 2017 Wiltshire Sports Awards, set up by the Swindon Advertiser, Gazette & Herald and Wiltshire Times in conjunction with Wiltshire & Swindon Sport (WASP).

All the winners will be announced at the Corn Exchange celebration ceremony at the end of January, which will include an audience with 1985 World Snooker champion and now-television commentator Dennis Taylor, who will be guest speaker.

The evening will be a celebration of all of the winners for all of the categories, and tickets are available priced at £15 per adult and £9 per child, to include a buffet.
