Live music fans have another venue to enjoy with the opening of Maggie’s in Corsham on Saturday.

Maggie’s is part of the Royal Oak pub in the town’s High Street and promises good quality acts from both home and abroad.

Owl in The Sun were the the first band to play the venue. The small but friendly and relaxed venue aims to offer an intimate atmosphere which helps the artist interact with the audience.

Owl in The Sun have had a lot of well-respected radio play, with BBCs' Bob Harris and Simon Mayo, both predicting great things for this classy six-piece act.

Their debut album Outside The City Way of Things is a blend of original songs, with their unique acoustic/country/gypsy/folk sound but a modern style, pleasing to the ear of any music fan.

The live performance featured superb musicianship and stunning five-part harmonies. Fiddle, flutes, accordions, harmonicas and whistles were supported by two fine guitar players and a creative percussion unit.

Double bass and lead vocalist Cathy Crozier-Cole guided this collection of fine musicians through a set of beautifully written and constructed songs, taking the audience on a journey from the mellow lullabies of Canyon to toe-tapping, rhythmic creations such as Flags and What Comes Around, right down to the dance-inducing gypsy-inspired Hey Bluff Revelation.

It was an encouraging start for the new venue, which has more high quality acts on the schedule.

Promoter Rob Wyborn said: “There is no doubt that the people of Corsham deserve a good quality live music venue and this was a great start to what we all hope will become a feature of the town.

“We have some very exciting acts lined up for Maggie’s. Canadian artist Rachel Van Zanten is due to include Maggie’s on her UK tour promoting her new album in early June. We also have a couple of New York singer/songwriters in our sights as well as some awesome bands from Austin, Texas.”

Next up this Saturday from 7.30pm are Sons of The Delta, a blend of acoustic and electric juke-joint blues.

Tickets, at £3, are on sale online at www.liveatmaggies.com or direct from The Royal Oak in Corsham.
