Bradford on Avon potter Jane Gibson is one of six artists showing their work in the Mudslingers Ceramics Group's Summer Exhibition and Sale, which runs from Tuesday until Sunday, 19 July 19 at, 11am to 6pm, Walcot Street Chapel, Bath, BA1 5UG, Free entry

Nine local ceramicists of the Bath ‘Mudslingers’ group are holding a Summer Exhibition and Sale at Walcot Street Chapel, Bath, from Tuesday 14 until Sunday 19 July, 11am to 6pm. The show offers an opportunity to meet the potters as each day at least two or three of the artists will be at hand to talk about the work on show. The Mudslingers are a group of local makers who meet regularly to share ideas and promote work made in their home studios. This is the third exhibition the group has held at this venue and they welcome all visitors.

Bradford-on-Avon based Jane Gibson’s porcelain and stoneware vessels are decorative but with a nod to the functional. They are thrown on the wheel and then altered, before abstract patterns of brightly coloured glazes are applied. Some are enhanced with gold lustre.

There will be a mixture of both functional and decorative ceramics on show including ‘raku’ outdoor-fired pots, decorative vessels, bird themed garden ware, hand-built animals, to the more abstract. All work is handmade in studios in the bath area, and offers a chance to buy original artwork direct from the makers, at a wide range of affordable prices. The show is open daily from 11am-6pm.

The ceramicists showing include Bear Flat based Kate Marshall, who makes raku ware, plus large bowls and storage jars decorated with sea glass found on the south coast beaches. Kate comments:

“We really enjoy having the chance to meet the public and explain how our work is made – there’s a great range of styles and the beauty of it is that it’s all made locally.”

Kim Birchall, who is based further afield in the Frome area, throws decorative bowls, brightly coloured with trailed glazes, also fired using the traditional Japanese ‘raku’ method.

Yvonne Elston, also from Bear Flat, makes a range of decorated frost proof birds suitable for both home and garden. Colourful and quirky, they are inspired by Scandinavian design and retro illustrations from the 50s and 60s.
