A 25-YEAR-OLD man has been arrested on suspicion of murdering a "gentle giant" who was killed in a hit-and-run crash following a row.
The suspect was detained in Swindon at 5.30am this morning and was being taken to a police station in Kent for questioning.
He was held on suspicion of murdering "family man" John O'Donohue, 33, also known as John Hedges, in Castlemaine Avenue, Gillingham, last Thursday.
Police believe the occupants of a green Ford Mondeo Estate were involved in a dispute with Mr O’Donohue and a friend at the junction with Grange Road.
They both walked off down Castlemaine Avenue and were soon followed by the Mondeo, which drove down the road towards them and hit Mr O’Donohue, who died later in hospital.
The other man was unharmed and ran to raise the alarm at a nearby badminton club.
The occupants of the vehicle, described as two dark-skinned men aged in their 20s and wearing casual clothing, ran away.
A team of detectives now believe the two men ran across a park behind the badminton club.
His mother, Maise O'Donohue, said: "John was a gentle giant who lived for his children. He was a loving father, son and grandchild, and was a family man first and foremost."
Today's arrest comes after a 20-year-old man, from Rochester, was held yesterday on suspicion of supplying a controlled drug and affray in connection with the incident.
He has been freed on police bail pending further inquiries, a Kent Police spokesman said.
Anyone with information is asked to call Kent Police on 101, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
