GRADUATE Apprentice Engineer Iris Umiten, from Swindon, has been named the south west’s Most Promising Apprentice in the prestigious regional awards programme run by the Civil Engineering Contractors Association (CECA).

The CECA South West Training Awards are presented to trainee civil engineers, apprentices and lifetime achievers in recognition of exceptional performance and dedication in their chosen careers.

Iris joined the Construction Technician Apprenticeship Programme with Swindon-based HOCHTIEF (UK) Construction Ltd. in September 2014. She worked on the Bath Corridor section of Network Rail’s Electrification programme before being assigned to a complex subterranean location beneath Box Tunnel, preparing task briefings, permits to dig and daily progress reports.

Iris consistently exceeded expectations on every task she was asked to do and won the respect of her colleagues for her capability and enthusiasm.

“I am delighted to win this award – I have learned so much over the last year and I would certainly encourage other young people to consider a career in civil engineering. My next goal is to complete my degree,” said Iris.

Tim Monckton at HOCHTIEF (UK) Construction said: “After 12-months as an apprentice, Iris has made excellent progress and is very much seen in the business as a rising star. This is particularly impressive as her intake group is seen as exceptionally strong.”

Alan Taylor, Executive Director at CECA South West, congratulated Iris on her achievement and HOCHTIEF (UK) Construction for investing in young people with such potential.

He said: “The civil engineering sector needs highly motivated people like Iris to deliver the infrastructure projects so important to the regional economy. The coming years will be crucial for progress to be made with infrastructure in the south west. Yes, we need to get the investment right in the region’s road, rail links and utilities – but we also need to have the right skills in place”.

Iris received an engraved cup, certificate and cheque for £500 at the Awards Lunch at the Grand Hotel, Torquay.
