SCHOOL children were turned away from St John's Academy in Marlborough after the school made a last minute decision to shut due to the snow.

The school originally stated that it would open at 10.30am and children living in and around the town began the slippery walk into school.

However upon getting to the school gates they were turned away and told that because staff were unable to get in and due to a gas problem at the school, it would now be shut for the rest of the day.

A notice on the school website stated: "Due to insufficient staff and gas problems, St John’s will have to stay closed today, Monday 19 March 2018."

Children were left to walk home again, with parents forced to make last minute childcare plans due to the closure.

Widespread snow fell across Marlborough and neighbouring villages overnight and a Yellow weather warning for ice is currently in place for the area.
