BOOK me on a plane to Memphis because after watching the sensational This Is Elvis all I want is to return to the homeland of the king of rock and roll.

Bristol Hippodrome was on its feet during the captivating performance by Steve Michaels as Elvis at the International Hotel, Las Vegas to give a comeback performance like no other.

The show starts in the NBC studios as Elvis films his now infamous TV comeback special, broadcast on December 3 1968 that relaunched his career. After 12 years starring in films and with, as tv show producer Steve Binder put it, a career in the toilet, Elvis is contemplating a return to the stage.

Dressed head to toe in black leather, Elvis gives a huge performance including a rendition of the Beatles hit Get Back and Simon and Garfunkel’s Bridge Over Troubled Water.

The show touches on the crippling insecurities of the star as he struggles with the grip of the Colonel and begins to rely on pills. His relationship with Priscilla is fraught as he spends more time away from his family, revealing an honest look into his life on the 50th anniversary year of his performance. By the second act the audience was transported to Las Vegas hotel, where he undertook a four week, 57 show residency.

With the band on stage beside him and three backing singers who are note perfect, Elvis’s operatic voice wowed with Blue Suede Shoes, Are You Lonesome Tonight and Suspicious Minds.

It is a captivating performance from the award winning Canadian tribute act who has even played alongside Elvis Presley’s iconic bandmates in the past.

If you are looking for a night with the king of rock and roll himself, look no further. This is Elvis is at the Bristol Hippodrome until Saturday. Tickets £17.90 – £51.40.
