SWINDON and Wiltshire Pride is celebrating as it has been five years since the Rainbow Walk was created.

As well as bringing colour to the steps at Theatre Square leading up to the Wyvern, the multi-coloured art installation is currently listed as the fourth best thing to do in Swindon on the public review website TripAdvisor.

The inclusive organisation has put a post on its Facebook page marking the walk's half-a-decade milestone, as well as providing some detail about how it came about.

A Pride spokesperson said: "Back in 2018, we put together a proposal to  Swindon Borough Council to install the Rainbow Walk and the proposal was accepted.

"Many hours went into preparing the stairs, sourcing the materials for free and installing the piece.

"The scheme was completed with donations from local branches of B&Q, Wickes, Homebase and Valspar paint who all donated materials for the project as well as a local business, Newjax, who pressure washed the steps.

"The stairs represent Swindon’s continuing commitment to equality, diversity and inclusivity for the LGBTQ+ community.

"Thank you to all of those who donated materials and their time to install the piece as well as the volunteers who have helped maintain Rainbow Walk over the years."

Now the charitable organisation is on a mission to get the Rainbow Walk ranked even higher on TripAdvisor and is encouraging people to leave a review.

"We would love some fresh reviews on the TripAdvisor page to mark its 5th year. If you have a few minutes to spare, can you mark it as excellent and add a review to the page? Creative reviews are best."

The 'point of interest/landmark' is listed on TripAdvisor as taking less than an hour to complete and it currently has 114 reviews, of which 108 are 'excellent'.

Here are a few of the highlights among them.

One reviewer said: "I thought steps were boring. I've seen quite a few and been terribly uninspired. Drab. Dreary. Definitely not going to brighten anyone's day. Or so I thought.

"My life has changed forever. I love Steps now because of these."

Another said: "Honestly the best thing to see in Swindon. Especially the blue steps, they’re my favourite. The green ones are also excellent."

A third person said: "Love to walk this way when I park my car and go into town. It makes me think of how far we have progressed as a town and country."
