Police officers have been accused of being heavy-handed while dealing with a violent incident outside a Wiltshire pub.

Two people were arrested and two officers received minor injuries during the altercation at The Greyhound pub in Mortimer Street, Trowbridge.

The incident reportedly began when a member of staff refused to serve a woman and asked her to leave.

At least seven police units, including an armed police unit and two police incident vans, attended the disturbance after police were called to the scene at around 6.50pm on Wednesday, April 10.

Police have since issued a public appeal to identify two men they want to interview in relation to assaults on two officers.

It is claimed police reacted with a “heavy-handed” response to the incident.

A 71-year-old man, who asked not to be named, said: “It sounded like there was a riot going on. I have watched a few videos taken last night by friends and family and the heavy handling by the police.

“I am a law-abiding person and I am 71-years-old and what I saw on the videos the police acted like they were in another country with no rules.

He claims that the problems with the police took place when everyone was congregated on the street after staff closed the pub.

“If the landlord had not closed the pub and kicked everybody out it would have been one drunk woman getting arrested and maybe her husband and no problems," he said.

“Instead, everyone was outside and the police lost it when they saw how many people were outside when they arrived.

Police have since been asked to investigate, following a complaint about their response to the incident.

In a statement, Wiltshire Police said: “Two people have currently been arrested in connection with this incident and enquiries remain ongoing.

“We are aware of a complaint in relation to the police response and this has been passed to our complaints team for consideration. It would be inappropriate to comment further at this time.”
