An employee of a bed company based in Trowbridge has clocked up an astonishing 60 years with the company.

Angela Withey, 75, joined Airsprung Beds at the age of 15, when it was based in Cradle Bridge, on April 21, 1964, and has been overseeing staff pay ever since.

She has worked in the same wages office at its Canal Road premises for decades and has seen a lot of changes in the way the company works.

Angela, of Balmoral Road, has a husband Michael and a daughter, Lisa Brownlee, and is a grandmother to Amelia, 11, and George, aged seven.

She said: "I’ll carry on for as long as I’ve got my health, and I think I’m doing a good job. I feel part of the furniture and we are a big family.

"I worked with my sister Hannette Laurens for 49 years in the same office before she retired during the Covid pandemic.

"I liked what I was doing. I like working with figures. This is the right job for me.

"Once you have got a job that you love, there is no reason to move on really. I never even thought of going anywhere else."

The company makes open coil, pocket sprung and memory foam mattresses for beds under the Airsprung and Gainsborough brand names at its factory on the Ladydown Industrial Estate on Canal Road.

Since starting as an office junior in the wages department Angela has risen to run the whole process as wages manager.

From working with handwritten ledgers, the noise of dozens of typewriters in the background, even down to Angela walking from the bank with a briefcase of cash for the weekly wages, times have changed over the years.

Directors and staff from past and present and members of Angela's family gathered in the company's showroom for a buffet lunch to celebrate Angela’s remarkable achievement and to present her with gifts to mark the milestone.

Richard Panes, Airsprung Beds finance director, paid glowing tribute to Angela's achievements highlighting her unswerving ability to adapt to the changing times, and praising her unfailing dedication and professionalism.

He added: "She has taken every technological development in her stride, and dedicated her spare time to learning whole new skillsets to stay ahead of the game."

After the presentation of gifts, flowers and a cake, Angela reminisced about her six decades and showed some of the many press cuttings she had from over the years.

One of the best memories of her career was being named Miss Airsprung in 1978 and representing the company at the Birmingham Furniture Show and in the Trowbridge Carnival parade.

One of the gifts included £1,000 to spend on jewellery of her choice but Angela also has an eye on a mattress when she finally decides to leave.

"I get a new mattress every ten years but I am hoping to be given a free one when I leave as a special bonus," she said.
