THE campaign to save the Highworth Rec swimming pool has received a major boost.

Town councillors have agreed to double their initial £10,000 commitment to the fund, plus another £30,000 over the next three years.

This cash injection leaves campaigners with only £27,000 to find, but time is running out to save the pool.

There are now only 12 days left to find the money because funds have been allocated from a dozen different sources. Donors need to know the project will go ahead before the end of the tax year. More than £1m has already been raised.

Phil Baker, the chairman of Highworth Recreation Committee, said: "We are very humbled by the generosity of the people of Highworth. I'm quietly confident now. The money is rolling in.

"It's really amazing. Businesses have been sending money in and people have been phoning the pool asking how they can give money.

"And I've been pleasantly surprised by the great support of the council, particularly the mayor Steve Weisinger. Every single pound will make a difference to our ability to reach our goal. I'd encourage everybody to carry on giving.

"When you think that two weeks ago we needed £66,000 we really are doing very well. To hit the target will be tremendous."

Mr Baker said the committee would continue to appeal to the public in order to bring in the final amount.

Ten life memberships of the pool are available, at a cost of £2,500 each.

He said: "That would obviously raise £25,000 if we are able to find ten life members.

"It would entitle them to free swimming at casual times for the rest of their lives."

The offer is only open to over 18s.

Mr Baker said: "We're looking to get even more money, which would help us reduce the need for the £100,000 loan which we are taking out to put the new roof on the pool."

The pool group needs to find the money by February 22 as otherwise it will lose money pledged from other organisations, and the whole project will be jeopardy.

Steve Weisinger, Highworth Mayor, said: "We felt we couldn't afford to let the pool die. It's not just for the people of Highworth but for Swindon and the surrounding villages as well.

"With the Olympics in London coming up in 2012 wouldn't it be fantastic if a swimmer or diver won a gold medal having trained at Highworth."
